I am the eldest son of a former soldier and police officer of South Vietnam. On April 30, 1975, my parents, three siblings, and I became refugees as we fled South Vietnam searching for safety and freedom. We sailed for 25 days on the Pacific Ocean on a trade ship to reach the United States territory of Guam. Under the Indochina Migration and Refugee Assistance Act, our family was admitted to the United States in the Summer of that same year.
The First Baptist Church of Palestine, Texas sponsored our family to their lovely small town in East Texas. Our family was given a chance to start our lives as new immigrants to this wonderful country where everyone can access freedom and opportunity. Not speaking one word of English, I started the first grade at Rusk Elementary School in Palestine, Texas in the Fall of 1975. My teachers and classmates welcomed me with open arms, and soon I became just another small-town kid living in America. I was baptized at the First Baptist Church at the age of eleven. My early years in Palestine, Texas instilled the values of hard work, honesty, integrity, and dependability that still serve as my guiding principles.
In 1983, my parents moved to Dallas, Texas and used all their savings to open a small Asian grocery store to serve the inner-city immigrant community of East Dallas. As a bilingual high school student, I often volunteered as an interpreter for recent immigrants. Helping immigrants fill out employment applications, apartment rental applications and scheduling doctor's visits; I gained a deep understanding of the power and satisfaction of helping others. That experience revealed to me that there is a need in my community for assistance with simple everyday issues and complex legal issues. As a young high school student, I set my sights on becoming an attorney to serve my community in the legal field.
My family later moved to Austin, and I am a proud graduate of McCallum High School. In 1990, I became the first person in my family to graduate from college by earning a degree in Finance from The McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas. I earned my law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1994. During my law school years, I worked as a law clerk in the Tax Division of the Office of the Attorney General.
Upon graduation, I opened my law office in North Austin to serve this culturally diverse community. I am passionate about helping my fellow immigrants contribute to the American Dream by becoming more familiar with this beautiful country through a better understanding of its complex legal justice system.
I live in Round Rock, Texas, with my lovely wife, Jenny, and our three beautiful children- Jacob, Lucas, and Kara.
I'm looking forward to meeting you and helping you with your legal matter,
Vinh M. Tran
